Resume’s are probably the hardest thing to figure out. Everyone you ask has some different kind of tip that usually has to do with the design. Some work and some don’t. But no matter how you design your resume, there are a few proven tricks to make it stand out; and all of them revolve around adding experience. Experience is a sure way to get noticed, even if the format of your resume isn’t awesome. Experience can range from certification, jobs, internships or your own personal pursuits (like a blog or club).
But let’s be real, getting experience can be hard. It requires you to get out there, get experience through volunteering or internship or work, and sometimes you just don’t have that kind of time. If you’re in this boat, then you’re not alone. I’ve been struggling for a while to find ways to build my resume without committing myself to hours of volunteering or a third job. It wasn’t until a few weeks ago that I found the solution: Google Analytics.
Google Analytics is an free certification program that teaches you how to use Google Analytics. Google Analytics is used by hundreds of thousands of websites and businesses. This means that it’s an industry tool that almost every business in every field is using. These analytics are detailed and the program is free. The only thing is, not many people know it’s inner workings, which makes individuals with this knowledge very valuable. And that’s where you come in.
You can boost your resume by becoming Google Analytics Certified in about 10-15 hours. That seems like a lot of time, and it is, but you are not required to complete the courses in a certain period of time. The online classes are free and comprise of mostly videos with small quizzes and exercises. I was able to get through the first lesson in a little over an hour, but it took 2-3 hours for others.
What’s more, you don’t need to be an analytics person to get it. It’s pretty easy and straight forward. I haven’t had any issues using it, and I’m a heavily writing, no-numbers-allowed kind of person. So how do you start?
Search for “Google analytics academy” and it should be in the first link. You will then be brought to the home page.
These four boxes are the basic courses. This will help you get familiar with the program and become comfortable with using it. You do not need to take all four courses in order to pass the final exam! The first two (Google Analytics for Beginners and Advanced Google Analytics) are what most people recommend.
Once you’ve picked a lesson you will go to the opening page.
From here you will click the blue “Register” button. All it takes to register is a gmail account. You will then be brought to a quick survey that asks about your knowledge of different topics. Don’t worry if you know nothing. I had to mark “beginner” on everything even though I’m really in the “know’s absolutely nothing” category. (The picture below is from the advanced course, since I’ve already completed the beginning and it won’t let me take the survey again.)
Once you complete this short survey, you can start the course! 80% of it is short videos that range form 2-5 minutes. Each of these usually has a little 3 question quiz or follow up activity that allows you to interact with the software.
There are 4-5 sections in each course, and each has about 4-6 topics/lessons. At the end of each sections you’ll take a short 10 question quiz. You must get at least 8 right, 80%, in order to pass the section and move on. This is also true for the final test. At the end of sections is a “final”. It’s set up exactly like the quizzes you take throughout and only took me 10 minutes to complete. If you pass with a score of 80% or more, you’ll get a certificate of completion.
Click on “VIEW CERTIFICATE” to see your certificate of completion. This certificate can be put on a resume or on your LinkedIn profile. It’s not as impressive as being fully certified, but it will definitely start to get you noticed.
Google Analytics is a great way to improve your resume and open doors of opportunities. You don’t need to be a numbers person to analyze this data. And fortunately, this kind of work is in high demand and will continue to be so as our world continues to advance in technology. You can work for major companies studying their website analytics or you can work for a ma-and-pa shop. Knowing how to work Google Analytics will also help you run your blog or personal business more effectively because you’ll understand the information better.
